All of the images on this CD are stored with keywords. You can use these keywords to help you to find the right image. This can be done by using the ‘keyword mode’ (under ‘search menu’) and adding keywords of your choice to the search criteria box in the following ways:
1. Use the full keyword list on the right hand side (the ‘all keywords’ box is automatically selected by default). Use the A-Z list or the drag bar to move through this full listing of keywords. Clicking on the word will add it to the search criteria box.
2. Use the free text entry box. This allows you to navigate quickly through the keyword lists. As you enter the letters you will see the keyword that most closely matches the spelling of what you have typed, at the top of the keyword list box.
3. A quick selection function has been included to give you access to the most popular keywords. To use these, click on any of the subject headings. The relevant keywords will then appear in the keyword list box.
4. If you wish to search only archival imagery, this can be done by using terms under the ‘archive’ heading, along with any other keywords. Only archive images will be searched.
5. If you wish to search all of the heading’s keywords, click on the heading, then click on ‘select all’.
Every time any term is added to the search criteria box, the search is automatically carried out and the results appear underneath. To view these images at any time, click ‘OK’, or on ‘view results’ in the navigational bar at the top of the screen.
To widen your search, for example to find banknotes and coins, enter the keyword ‘banknote’, check the OR box and enter the keyword ‘coin’. Your search will locate all images which are associated with either banknotes or coins.
To narrow your search, for example to find red cars, enter the keyword ‘red’, check the AND box and enter the keyword ‘car’. Your search will locate all images which are associated with car and red.
To exclude an item from your search, for example to find offices that do not include telephones, enter the keyword ‘office’, check the AND NOT box and enter the keyword ‘telephone’. Your search will locate all images which are associated with offices, excluding those associated with telephones.
You may also search by photographer name. Click on ‘photographer’ and then make your selection from the list which appears in the keyword list box.
You may also search by image reference. Click on ‘image reference’ and make your selection from the list which appears in the keyword list box.
If you make a mistake, you may undo your last change to the ‘search criteria box’ by using ‘undo’. Use ‘clear all’ to begin a new search.
